Tynemouth itself is a popular weekend destination for visitors from across the North East and beyond. Its beaches, heritage, cafes, bars and quirky shops (check out Razzberry Bazaar and Green Ginger Shopping Arcade situated in a 19th Century former church) draw crowds even on the chilliest of winter days.
History lovers will enjoy the ancient ruined Castle and Priory and the impressive monument to Admiral Collingwood (who won the battle of Trafalgar after Lord Nelson had been killed.) which dominates the view over the mouth of the river Tyne and its harbour.
Beach lovers and surfers are attracted to the three-quarter mile Long Sands, home to Riley's Fish Shack, which in March 2017 featured on Michel Roux Jr.'s TV series "Hidden Restaurants".
Stormy days draw photographers and spectators in large numbers to witness the waves breaking spectacularly against the half-mile long harbour walls.
